I am fortunate enough to live in a very cultured town. We have a good local theatre, a cinema, several festivals, award winning gardens and enough choirs to sing something different every day of the year.
I appreciate them all I really do. I was fortunate enough to be able to afford (just) to go to the opera last Saturday. Madama Butterfly was exquisitely performed in the newly refurbished splendour of the theatre and a good, and thought provoking, time was had by all.
I think however that if all I had been able to afford was to walk through town with the god-children admiring the Christmas lights that would have been enough. They are no different from last year. The town council has probably been debating long and hard whether light bulbs should be replaced and Santa should be paid in these recession hit times, but they are art and they are appreciated by us and by many.
